first group of people invited to the white house after president obama was re-elected were these folks. they were union heads. they were community organizers. they were far left organizations like move on. they were the first ones brought into the white house. again, no surprise. this is who the president is. these are his people. this is what he believes. it's not a stretch to say the unions are leaning on him, not to do entitlement reform. this is also what the president believes. you're also right to say that at some point, the laws of the economics kick in. we're seeing this now in greece, throughout western europe. when something can want go on, it won't. it will stop. we are going to hit a wall here. this is what governor romney, paul ryan have been talking about. ryan's two years of budget proposals passed by the house, killed by the democrats in the senate saying, look, we know the laws of economics kick in here, and these programs are going to come to a screeching halt because there is no more money, so what we'd like to do now, before the crisis, is try to reform these progra

that anybody would have made in the white house, and i'm not an apoll gist for the obama, but what i can speak about in detail is the way he handled this particular episode and can tell you this was not an easy call, and a couple that were gutsy. one is ultimately the two options waived were firing a small missile at the target, the man called the pacer, observed him walking in the compound, a missile the size of the foreman fired from a drone so small i doubt pakistan would have known it flew in and back. there's no downside or risk to the option. no forces put in jeopardy. it's a very reliable weapon, success with it, a fire missile. there's a chance you're not going to hit the target rvetion right? that's the only downside to the option. there's no huge diplomatic fallout. there's a good chance people would never know for sure. well, who killed the man in the compound if they pursued that option? well, i'm thinking, if i'm president of the united states, that's a fairly attractive option. the only downside to that is if you miss or kill the wrong person, something you'd like to av

. as you know, president obama invited congressional leaders to the white house last week. they struck a rare tone of bipartisanship after that meeting. then as you point out, seems like both sides sort of went back to their respective corners and democrats really digging in their heels on entitlements, republicans digging in their heels on the issue of taxes. we're told that aids on the hill are trying to work through a couple of compromise scenarios, especially on the issue of taxes, that would essentially allow taxes to go up on wealthier americans without increasing the rates. there are a couple of ways that you can do this. one would be to roll back tax breaks that will wealthier americans get. another idea is to possibly tax higher income earners on the lump sum of their salaries. so they're sort of batting some of those ideas back and forth. one component though, alex, that is giving folks around here some optimism, speaker boehner and majority leader eric cantor seem to be working in lock step on these issues. compare that to the debt ceiling fight of 2011 when they weren't on

are now before the supreme court, not brought by the government and obama administration believes that laws unconstitutional but wrought by the house of representatives which has the right to defend an act of congress that the president chooses not to defend. i think it's a sure bet that the court will undertake the defense of marriage act again because there are judgments in the lower court saying it's unconstitutional. so again, that is the agenda setting function and what we are going to be hearing about, debating and talking about and ultimately getting a decision. it really lies in the power of the court and a very major and i said under appreciated power. one question that it raises really is how did the justices know what's important? how do they know what they should be deciding? obviously when people bring their appeals to the spin court they lay out the case and the format of one of these petitions question presents what it is they want the court to decide. they have 30 pages to make their case. the court should hear them out. the justices live in the world and they don'

been a lot of gop soul-searching after president obama won re-election, but should democrats be concerned, too? especially if you look at the state legislatures and governors houses where according to "the new york times" at least 24 states will be completely controlled by republicans, both with legislatures and governships. what does that say for democrats? >> it's a great point. i think, first of all, it suggests we have to be vigilant, that we can't take politics as a federal level reality. we have to talk about state level and talk about local levels because that's where a lot of stuff gets done. that's where a lot of bills get passed. where a lot of referendums, say on gay marriage or legalizing marijuana for medical use, or the use of certain kinds of paradigms for bills gets passed. so you have to be able to talk about the local level and democrats have to be vigilant here and concerned about the fact that even though nationally the vision of president obama carried the day. the weight of his agenda is on resources to vulnerable populations in a time of crisis and not the

to be optimistic about this problem. certainly president obama has been meeting with congressional leaders. he had them here at the white house last week. they came out and struck this tone of bipartisanship, but they're also cautious in that optimism. you remember the knockdown dragout debt ceiling fight of the summer of 2011. i don't think they think it's going to get that ugly. at the same time this is not going to be easy going as we head to the first of the year. now republicans are still sort of digging in their heels on the issues of taxes. democrats seem to be hardening their stance. taxes, that challenge is going to be to find a way to increase taxes on the wealthy. to increase taxes on higher earners without increasing the rate. that would be a win win for both sides. the question is, how do you do that? one option, to potentially roll back tax breaks that wealthier americans and corporations are given. they're batting a couple of ideas around. one thing that is giving folks hope, the fact that house speaker john boehner and eric cantor seem to be working more in lock ste
